Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Pricing & Booking
Photography
- Is your media preference film or digital?
- Currently I photograph digitally. I learned photography with film.
- Do you work with a second photographer?
- It depends on the event. Some need multiple points of view, some not. I often have an assistant to help.
- Do you provide digital negatives (RAW files) after the shoot?
- I will provide files appropriate for sharing on social media for the final images. Most people can’t read the RAW images. The files I provide are the standard JPG format.
- What is the difference between edited photos and retouched?
- Those are two terms for the same thing, often used interchangeably.
- Do I get all the images you take?
- No, I will take a lot more than are used. Maybe the flash didn’t fire. Maybe it didn’t come out for a number of reasons. I will cull those out in the beginning. But I understand sometimes there are photos that are not technically good, but are emotionally meaningful.
The Photo Session/Event
- How many hours do you suggest we set aside for wedding day photos?
- That depends on the situation. We will need to discuss and give you an answer that applies to your specific situation.
- I have downtime between events on my wedding day. Will I be charged for that downtime?
- That depends on the situation. We will need to discuss and give you an answer that applies to your specific situation.
- What happens if we go over the contracted amount of time?
- That depends on the situation. In most cases is not a problem. We will discuss that to make sure it is not an issue.
- Which locations do you recommend for a Portrait/Engagement Session?
- I want to photograph you in some place that is emotionally meaningful for you. It does not matter where. It is my challenge to make it as best we can. What matters is it is special to you. I will help suggest special locations.
- What happens if we are running late to our shoot? Will you extend the shooting time?
- Please let me know as soon as possible. I will do what I can to accommodate.
- What if it is raining during an outdoor session or due to the weather there is no sunset?
- That is my challenge, to make the best of it. There are lots of techniques to make the best of it. How will depend on the details. Weather is a factor I track. Sometimes the best sessions have a chance of rain. As the day approaches we can define the need for a backup. Maybe it is reschedule, or maybe indoor.
After the Session/Event
- How soon after the event are the proofs ready for viewing?
- I do my best to get the photos ready as soon as possible. Typically it is a few days.
- Do you offer online proofs? How do I select the images I want?
- I have found the best is in person. Monitors and phones might be out of calibration. Maybe the brightness is turned up or down from what it should be. I calibrate all of my equipment to make sure I accurately represent the photographs. I have found showing the photos in person helps me read your reaction to the photos. I can suggest how to make the best of it, for a specific situation. Should the photo be gloss, Matt, metallic…
- Do you offer online viewing?
- After the initial showing I will make them available online, for sharing on social media.
- Can I see some of my pictures right away?
- It will depend on the situation. As long as I know ahead of time I can plan for this. It is common to show a slideshow at the reception of the wedding that just happened.
- Do you backup your images? How can we be sure our images won’t get lost?
- From the time the image captured it is saved to 2 different cards. The first thing I do is copy it to a 3rd drive and a 4th as a backup.
- What if I lose my copy of the files?
- I keep all the images. Depending on how long it has been since our session, it will define how long it takes to recover.
Hardcopies
- How long does it take to get my prints?
- My part of the process takes a week or two. The part that holds things up is your choice of images that I have little to do with. I do everything I can to help with your choice. The delivery depends on what is ordered, from a few days for a print to a month for a handmade album. I will let you know for what you choose.
- Extra prints, how does that work and how much?
- Multiple prints of the same thing are typically discounted. How much discount, depends on specifically what you are wanting.
